Romantic Hotels in Nottingham
Best-known as the haunt of Robin Hood, Nottingham dates back to the 6th century, when hand-carved underground caves served as dwellings. The caves offer a glimpse of Anglo-Saxon life. Guests can access them through the City of Caves tour in the Broadmarsh shopping center. Nottingham is also home to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, originally built in 1189 and said to be England’s oldest inn. Visitors can no longer find lodgings there, as Crusade-bound knights did, but the inn serves delicious sandwiches and beverages. Nearby Nottingham Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress complete with 1,000-year-old underground passageways. The Brewhouse Yard, a row of 17th century cottages, houses a museum depicting daily life in Nottingham over the last three centuries. Those in need of retail therapy and refreshment will find it in Old Market Square, the largest surviving market square in England.
