Waco, Texas may be best known in recent American memory as the site of the deadly 1993 standoff between the Branch Davidian religious sect and United States Federal officers in nearby Mt. Carmel. Despite the infamous history, Waco is actually a fun place to visit, and offers an Old West feel. Lake Waco and the Brazos River offer opportunities for fishing and water sports and Mother Neff State Park covers 259 acres and is the oldest state park in Texas. The Waco Mammoth Site was first discovered in 1978, where 25 mammoths from the Pleistocene Era were discovered along with the bones from a camel and a young saber-toothed tiger. In addition, Waco is the birthplace of Dr. Pepper soda, celebrated in the Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute. The museum is housed in a former bottling plant for the soft drink.
