Fort Stockton is a small town in South Texas that is named for the fort of the same name. Founded in 1859, Fort Stockton developed due to it's close proximity to Comanche Springs, once the 3rd largest source of spring water in Texas.The fort is made up of original and reconstructed military buildings that once served as a US Army base during the Mexican War. Today, visitors can still tour the men's barracks and guardhouse, used by the 9th Calvary's 'Buffalo Soldiers.There is also a video presentation that pertains to the fort's historic importance. The town itself offers a walking tour that takes visitors past a number of important attractions including The Annie Riggs Museum, which was once a 19th century adobe hotel. Other notable stops are a jail built in 1883 and the Grey Mule Saloon, an excellent example of nightlife in the Old West. Don't miss Big Bend National Park for great examples of desert wildlife.
