Despite its modest size, Marmaris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey. Located on the Mediterranean coast, the city enjoys consistently warm weather throughout the year. Visitors flock to the area’s superb beaches during the summer months, particularly the Marmaris and Icmeler beaches, which feature clear blue waters and are dotted with numerous restaurants. Those looking for a more unique adventure often make the short trip to Pamukkale. There they will find terraced travertine pools that are filled with hot spring water. The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum is also located nearby and features ancient artifacts found in the surrounding area. Those interested in enjoying the water who do not want to visit the beach often head to the Dalyan River. Visitors to the river can either lounge on the shore, book a fishing tour or relax in the river’s famous mud baths. Vacationers who want to stay dry often head to the city’s historic old town district where they will find the Marmaris Castle and Museum. Built in the early 15th century by the legendary Suleyman the Magnificent, it was restored in the late 1970s to its original grandeur. The museum inside currently maintains seven galleries that exhibit displays about the castle’s military status update.
