Bangkok Vacations

The capital and largest city in Thailand, Bankgok is widely considered to be one of the liveliest and most vibrant places in the world for travelers to visit. It neatly balances a full embrace of the modern world with its traditional Buddhist past. Accordingly two of its top attractions are the Buddhist temples of Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Sometimes referred to as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, construction on Wat Pho began in the late eighteenth century. Home to over 1000 images of Buddha, including the largest in the world, it is also the ceremonial birthplace of Thai massage. Wat Arun, named for the Indian God of the Dawn, was built early in the nineteenth century and figures prominently in one of the most popular festivals in Thailand, the Royal Tod Kathin, where the king of Thailand ceremonially appears to present new robes to the temple’s monks. Travelers interested in seeing some of Bangkok’s most spectacular architecture typically flock to the complex of buildings collectively known as the Grand Palace. Built in the late eighteenth century, it has served as one of the primary homes of the country’s royal family ever since. Perhaps the Grand Palace’s signature attraction is the Gold Tower, which is adorned with literally millions of tiny pieces of glass covered with gold leaf that glimmer brilliantly in the sunlight.
