Madrid Vacations

As the capital and largest city in Spain, Madrid offers vacationers a multitude of modern and historic sites to visit. One of its most popular attractions is the Golden Triangle of Art, an area along the Paseo del Prado that houses three of Spain’s most significant museums. Most notable is the Museo del Prado, which houses a collection dating from the 12th century and includes masterpieces by El Greco, Hieronymus Bosch and Goya. Just steps away from the Prado is the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, which is dedicated to displaying art from the 20th century, including pieces by Spanish masters Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Next to the Reina Sofia is the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, whose collection is focused more on European than Spanish art and includes works by painters such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Edward Hopper. Visitors looking for a break from the city’s bustling urban area often retreat to the Buen Retiro Park for the afternoon. Set on over 350 lush acres, the park is dotted with artists and performers as well as landmarks such as the Crystal Palace and the sculpture El Angel Caido, which is inspired by Milton’s poem Paradise Lost. Those interested in the royal family of Spain can visit their official home at the Palacio Real de Madrid. The largest palace in all of Europe, it contains 2800 separate rooms and includes works by Caravaggio and Goya as well as the royal collections of porcelain, watches and silverare.
