One of the most well-mannered cities in the South, Charleston is often called The Holy City for the numerous churches that dot its picturesque landscape. These include Saint Mary’s of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Church, one of the oldest cathedrals in the state. Charleston's most recognizable tourist attraction, however, is Rainbow Row, a series of colorfully painted houses built in the early twentieth century to revitalize the city. Visitors to the Exchange and Provost building can see actual dungeons used to imprison some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as rooms where George Washington attended parties. Those interested in a more cultural experience should visit Charleston during May and June when the Spoleto Festival is being held. One of the largest performing arts festivals in the world, it features hundreds of performances in dance, opera and theater.
