Ashland is a city in Oregon best known for it's annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The internationally renowned festival is held in Ashland from February through October every year and is responsible for a significant part of Ashland's economy. It was started in 1935 and features eleven plays each season with about half Shakespeare productions, the other half classic productions from other writers such as Oscar Wilde. Lithia Park, the largest in Ashland, has miles of hiking trails, a concert stage, ice skating and two duck ponds. The name lithia comes from the lithium oxide in the park's water, which has a strong mineral taste and is often a shock to visitors drinking from the park's water fountains. Restaurants in the area include the Greenleaf Restaurant, where patrons can eat outdoors next to a creek, and Paste Piatti, featuring an Italian menu.
