Oklahoma Vacations

Located in the picturesque Great Plains region of the United States, Oklahoma is a must-see destination for those interested in learning more about America’s native citizens. Thirty nine Native American tribes are headquartered within the state’s boundaries, and many offer spectacular museums to visitors interested in learning about their cultures. In 1834, Oklahoma was declared an Indian Territory by the U.S. government, and during the following years Native American tribes were forced to relocate to its boundaries. In the mid nineteenth century Euro-American settlers flocked to the territory to illegally stake out land, prior to the official opening of the state to non-Native Americans in 1889. Despite economic spikes due to farming and oil discovery in the 1920s, the state suffered during the Great Depression, sparking a westward migration.

Visitors flock to Oklahoma City to experience a wealth of arts, culture and sports. Visitors can learn about one of the state’s favorite instruments by touring the American Banjo Museum. The unusual museum is home to more than 300 banjos that pay tribute to its humble origins and exciting evolution. Visitors who would like to experience the art scene can stop by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, situated at the very center of the city’s Arts District. The museum houses a stunning collection of American and European art, along with rotating collections. Those who would like to learn more about the Western settlement of Oklahoma can stop in at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum to explore art, artifacts and exhibitions about a cowboy’s life in the west. Every June representatives of more than 100 North American tribes meet in downtown Oklahoma City to share their heritage and celebrate their culture at the Red Earth Festival. Travelers who would like to learn more about the native culture can head over to the Oklahoma Indian Art Gallery, which features both historical and contemporary Native American artists such as Ben Harjo and Robert Taylor.

Visitors who are interested in spending some time outdoors can choose from one of many state and national parks. Those who would like to tour one of America’s largest landmarks can head over to Great Plains State Park to explore the rugged Wichita Mountains or rock climb in the spectacular granite boulder fields. Visitors can hike or bike on 400 acres of land or explore the vast Tom Steed Lake via boat. Those who are interested in exploring a bountiful and dramatic landscape can turn their wheels to Red Carpet County. Here couples and families alike can explore the stunning sand dunes at Little Sahara State Park on foot or ATV. The park features more than 1,450 acres of sand deposited by the Cimarron River more than 11,000 years ago. Visitors can head over to Great Salt Plains State Park to view the spectacular remnants of an ocean that prehistorically covered Oklahoma. Outdoor adventurers can explore the unusual site on foot or horseback or head over to the Great Salt Plains to view more than 300 rare birds or dig for rare selenite crystals.

Those looking for a small town escape can head over to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Once a rich oil town, Tulsa’s downtown is adorned with stunning Art Deco architecture, including several historic buildings. Visitors wanting to learn more about music culture should stop by Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame to learn more about famous Oklahoman Jazz artists. Guests looking to indulge their art sweet tooth should stop by the Brady District to catch a show at the Brady Theater and explore the cornucopia of local art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and night clubs. Couples looking for a romantic afternoon on the edge of town can enjoy a retreat to the Stone Bluff Cellars. The winery offers tours, wine tasting a gift shop and an excellent restaurant for wine aficionados.
