As the largest city in the United States, New York is perhaps the premier vacation destination in the entire country. A great way to begin a vacation in New York is to take the elevator to the observation deck of the Empire State Building. From its lofty perch, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. Those traveling with children will enjoy spending the day in Central Park. Almost too large to experience in one day, it offers a huge array of activities such as picnicking in Sheep’s Meadow, relaxing in a horse-drawn carriage as it travels through the park or skating in historic Wollman’s Rink. Following a day in the park, many enjoy taking the short walk to Times Square. It is home to some of the best people-watching in the world as well as being the center of the Broadway Theater District. Those who prefer to spend their vacation shopping will find dozens of neighborhoods to cater to their individual tastes. Great deals can be found in Chinatown, while Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue are packed with high-end stores from around the world. Though certainly the city’s most somber landmark, crowds still flock to Ground Zero to pay their respects to the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
