Nevada Vacations
Each year millions of visitors flock to this arid state to seek the experience of a lifetime. However, many guests overlook the bounty of beauty and history the state has to offer, only to be lured by the glamour of Las Vegas. While Sin City is often quick to draw attention, the state is filled with natural wonders such as stunning Lake Tahoe (located on the border of California and Nevada) and spectacular Great Basin National Park. The state’s first inhabitants were the Paiute and Puebloan people, who experienced a relatively unobtrusive ruling by the Spanish until the nineteenth century, when pioneers crossed Nevada in search of California’s gold field. The state sported an economic and population boom in 1859 when silver was discovered just south of Reno. What became known as the Comstock Lode, the largest silver deposit ever found at the time, was established soon after. While the mine offered exceptional economic stimulus, it was eventually mined to extinction, which resulted in an economic and population depression. In 1931 the state legalized gambling to bring in revenue, which has since provided Nevada with a thriving economy.
Visitors flock to Las Vegas to enjoy gambling, fantastic food entertainment and a one of a kind experience. The Las Vegas Strip hosts many of the country’s most famous casinos that go above and beyond to entertain guests with the different themes. Paris Las Vegas features a replica Eiffel Tower while the Venetian is interlaced with indoor canals. Visitors can watch nightly volcanic activity at the Mirage Las Vegas or view lions at the MGM grand. Guests can enjoy a spectacular array of games at the numerous casinos or catch a world-famous show at one of the many venues. Those who would like a mellower casino experience can head to downtown Las Vegas and enjoy the nightly outdoor light show amicably known as the Fremont Street Experience. Visitors who are interested in leaving the city for a day trip can head off to nearby Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers a nearly endless array of hiking and horseback riding trails for the outdoor adventurers. Guests can view the spectacular colored canyons from the perch of a narrow trail. Nature lovers should keep their eyes peeled for bighorn sheep, wild burrows and wild horses. Visitors can stop by nearby historic Blue Diamond village to learn more about the hardships of early Nevada life in a mining town. Those looking for an outdoor experience in the state’s higher elevations can enjoy a pampered retreat at Nevada’s stake of Lake Tahoe. Visitors can head off into the spectacular terrain for a hike or chilly swim. Unlike California’s side of the lake, Nevada’s slice of Tahoe is speckled with casinos for a high-elevation gaming experience. Guests who are traveling to Lake Tahoe in the winter can choose from 15 alpine ski resorts or 12 cross-country ski resorts in the nearby area.
Those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of Nevada’s cities can flock to Great Basin National Park. Located 60 miles to the southeast of Ely, the national park offers a wealth of unmatched outdoor activities year round. Visitors can hike through the Bristlecone Pine forests or swim in stunning Stella Lake in the summer or cross-country ski into the park in the winter to enjoy stunning views of Mt. Wheeler. Perspective spelunkers can explore the dramatic underground formations in Lehman Caves while would-be miners can head over to Garnet Hill for a once-in-a-lifetime rock hounding experience. Garnet Hill is renowned for its plethora of stunning Garnet specimens, which can be hunted for in streams or chiseled away with hammers and picks.
