Once a stop on the Pony Express, Ely is now a gateway to several national parks in eastern Nevada. Cave Lake State Park is the closest, while Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park is just a few miles further away. The largest of the nearby parks, the Great Basin National Park, is roughly an hour from town. Travelers also travel to Ely to visit the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, a National Historical Landmark that features a large selection of trains from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Visitors also flock to Ely to attend the Silver State Classic Challenge, a Cannonball-run style race that runs for ninety miles and passes through Ely.
