Elko, Nevada is located near the Ruby Mountains and has an elevation of over 5,000 feet. Families can see a still functioning gold mine by visiting the Newmont Gold Company. On the second Tuesday of every month, April through October, visitors can see the mining pit, the facilities and a smelting area. The Northeastern Nevada Museum displays mastadon remains that were found in the nearby area. There are also Indian artifacts, an antique printing press, a turn of the century kitchen and other interesting displays. A few miles out of town, families can find the ghost towns of Tuscarora and Midas. Tuscarora houses a cemetery, museum and buildings from over 100 years ago. Midas is smaller, with only 23 residents and boasts geological finds in its old mineshafts as well as gastronomic gems in its small restaurant.
