Elko is located along the Humboldt River in Nevada and is the largest city on the highway between Salt Lake City and Reno, attracting many tourists. The city hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year. In January, Elko is the setting for the week-long National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, featuring food, music, poetry and celebrations of the Old West. The National Basque Festival is held annually in July and includes traditional Basque dancing, strongman competitions and a running of the bulls. This event is occasionally referred to as the "Basco Fiasco" by detractors. Of course, being located in Nevada, there are numerous gambling establishments including the High Desert Casino and Casino Express, noted for having a large, stuffed polar bear on display inside.
