Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico and one of the premier vacation destinations in the Southwest. One of the city’s most popular attractions is the Sandia Peak Tramway. Built in 1966, it is the third-longest tram in the world, carrying passengers for over a mile along the crestline of the Sandia Mountains. Those who are traveling with children enjoy visiting the Albuquerque Biological Park, which is home to the Albuquerque Aquarium, the Rio Grande Zoo and the Rio Grande Botanic Garden. The zoo is the most popular of the three attractions, housing over 200 species of animals in its 64-acre park, including exotic ones such as orangutans, giraffes and koala bears. Families also flock to the Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum of Albuquerque, which includes a multitude of interactive exhibits for kids and parents alike. Those interested in a more cultural experience often head to the Albuquerque Museum, whose collection is dedicated to preserving both the modern art of the Southwest as well as pieces dating back over 400 years. Finally, Albuquerque is the hot air balloon capital of the United States. Many visitors flock to the city every October to attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. With over 700 balloon launches during its nine-day run, it is the largest hot air balloon event in the world.
