Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina is best known in history as the site of the Wright Brothers first flight in 1903. Nearby Kitty Hawk usually gets the credit, but Kill Devil Hills was the actual site. The Wright Brothers National Memorial, located in the town, commemorates the brothers' accomplishment as well as Orville's speed record set in 1911. Other monuments scattered throughout the the town that can be seen on a walking tour include "The Conquest of the Air," "12 Seconds That Changed the World," and "The First Successful Flight of an Airplane."
