Known as “The Queen City,” Charlotte is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in North Carolina. A prime destination for those interested in a sports vacation, Charlotte is one of the primary hubs of auto racing in the Southeast. It is home to both the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Located in a huge 400,000 square-foot facility, the Hall of Fame displays numerous exhibits about the sport’s most famous drivers as well as notable stock cars and memorabilia. Charlotte also has several professional sports teams that call the city home, including the Charlotte Bobcats who compete in the NBA and the Charlotte Panthers who are members of the NFL. Considering that the state motto of North Carolina is “First in Flight,” it is no surprise that Charlotte is home to the Carolinas Aviation Museum. Founded in 1992, the museum displays over 50 classic aircraft, including dozens of military aircraft that once served in combat. Those interested in a more cultural experience typically head to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. One of the premier modern art museums in the Southeast, its permanent collection includes more than 1,400 works of art, including pieces by notable artists such as Andy Warhol, Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso.
