Missouri Vacations
This spectacular state is located on the brink of America’s Great Plains, and is home to the region’s largest two cities. As the most populated state in the region, Missouri has no shortage of entertainment possibilities for the inquisitive traveler. Guests can explore the wild reaches of the Ozark Mountains or stroll through the cultured cities in search of history. Missouri was slow to develop during the nineteenth century, offering only a small number of river towns and farmland. The state was admitted to the Union in 1821, and was designated a slave state after the negotiations of the Missouri Compromise. Despite its long industrial recovery following the Civil War, the state has maintained a prestigious standing in the United States, even hosting the World’s Fair in 1904.
Visitors to the state can find some of the area’s best attractions within the hustling and bustling Kansas City. Travelers arriving to the city with families, friends or significant others are sure to find no shortage of entertainment in this historic city. Family travelers can let their children get up close and personal with wild animals at the Kansas City Zoo. The zoo features unique attractions such as the Polar Bear Passage and the African Sky Safari. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, on the other hand, can awaken the inner artist and archeologist in any visitor. Guests can view more than 33,500 works of art or gaze at the stunningly gilded sarcophagus of 2,300-year old Meretites. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy a Royals game while music-lovers can listen to their favorite band at the sophisticated Overland Park concert venue. Just minutes from downtown Kansas City, the Square is home to a number of boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants, antique stores, art galleries and many more delightful entertainment options. Visitors can escape to the nearby Louisburg Cider Mill to sample locally-produced foods and beverages or take a tour of the spectacular factory.
Eastern Missouri is home to one of the state’s biggest destinations. St. Louis, crowned by its picturesque 630-foot Gateway Arch, is one of the area’s most prominent attractions. The stainless steel Gateway Arch monument draws millions of visitors each year, along with the attached Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Sports enthusiasts can catch a Cardinals Game at Busch Stadium or watch the St. Louis Blues carve up the ice at Scottrade Center. The city is also home to the world-famous Six Flags theme park, which pleases both the young and the young-at-heart with thrilling rides. Visitors looking for a hopping nightlife can stroll down to Laclade’s Landing or Washington Avenue to choose from some of the city’s finest bars and nightclubs. Westport Plaza offers 42 acres of entertainment, trendy boutiques and upscale restaurants, ensuring a quality night on the town. Visitors who would like to learn more about the city’s history can explore Forest park, the sight of the 1904 World’s Fair. The park’s celebrated attractions include numerous scenic hiking trails, the World’s fair Pavilion and the picturesque Jewel Box greenhouse.
Missouri’s capital city entices visitors with a historically rich culture, spectacular landscapes and numerous parks. Jefferson City is home to numerous historic buildings, including the spectacular Capitol Building. Completed in 1917, the picturesque Capitol spans three acres and includes the Missouri State Museum. Guests can stroll down to Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, the first area to be settled in the entire region. Those who would like to take a look into the state’s more somber past can stop by the Missouri State Penitentiary, which held the region’s most notorious inmates from 1836 to 2004. Visitors who would like to take a look into some of Missouri’s local plant life can stop by the Runge Nature center, which offers more than 3,000 square feet of exhibit space, an indoor wildlife viewing area and a plethora of nature trails.
