In the state of Minnesota, the land of a thousand lakes, Rochester sits near no natural lakes. Rochester is most noted for the Mayo Clinic, widely considered one of the best medical facilities in the world, and the backbone of Rochester's economy. The clinic's business brings over two million visitors a year to Rochester. Nearly all of Rochester's downtown is taken by the clinic's facilities along with the restaurants, hotels and stores that support the medical complex. Other sites to see in Rochester include the elaborate 1920s theater, the Chateau, which now houses a Barnes and Nobles bookstore, and the Avalon Music building, a historically important building that was the only area hotel that would accept black guests in the age of segregation. It was the both the scene of a march for racial equality in 1963 as well as a cross burning.
