Michigan Vacations

Michigan boasts the famous reputation of having more to offer than first meets the eye. Escape from the relatively featureless Midwest to embark on an adventure through a state that is home to more beaches than any of the East Coast states. Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes, and features spectacular islands off its coasts, making it a great vacation destination for outdoor adventurers. Michigan is home to the United States’ third oldest town, Sault Ste Marie, which was founded by a French explorer in 1668. During the Revolutionary War Michigan was a strategic British stronghold, housing one of the most prominent ports in the fur trade. Michigan finally found its economic niche in the 1920s when Detroit became an epicenter for the auto industry.

Visitors who want to tour self-proclaimed Motor City can stop by Detroit. This working city is constantly growing into a cultural epicenter, drawing visitors from all over the world. Guests who would like to learn about Michigan’s history can stop by the Detroit Historical Museum or stroll through the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Children and adults alike can enjoy the brain-teasing exhibits at the Detroit Science Center, which features the Chrysler IMAX Dome Theatre, the Dassault Systéms Planetarium and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Guests can take a two hour excursion on the Detroit Princess Riverboat, which passes by notable attractions such as Hart Plaza, the Ambassador Bridge and Belle Island. Those who want to spend some time outside can escape to Belle Island Park, a 987 acre park that is brimming with excitement for the whole family. Visitors can explore the Belle Isle Beach and Waterslide, Kid’s Kingdom Playscape, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory or the Dossin Great Lakes Maritime Museum. Couples looking for some time alone can hike through more than 150 acres of woods or sit on one of the many beaches and enjoy the beauty of the Detroit skyline. Car enthusiasts can visit Detroit in January to experience the spectacular North American International Auto Show, which features more than 500 innovative vehicles at Cobo Center. Those who miss the auto show can take solace in the Model T. Automotive Heritage Complex, GM Renaissance Center and MotorCities National Heritage Area.

Guests who would like to enjoy some of Michigan’s many historical and outdoor attractions can escape to Mackinac Island. Just a short ferry ride from Mackinac City, visitors can spend their time touring one of the island’s many historic parks or stroll through its historic downtown. This car-free island boasts a laid back, yet spunky personality, and is home to the famous British Stronghold, Fort Mackinac. Guests who want to learn more about the history can stop by this historic fort for demonstrations and recreations of its prominence during the Revolutionary War. Visitors who would like to explore the island’s many trails and attractions can do so on foot or bicycle, while those wanting to travel in style can take a carriage tour around the town. Guests who would rather view the island from afar have the option to drive along the 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge that crosses the Straits of Mackinac. Aptly nicknamed ‘Big Mac,’ the Mackinac Bridge sports stunning views of two Great Lakes and hundreds of islands.

Visitors who would like to escape to isolation can enjoy a vacation at Isle Royale National Park, located in stunning Lake Superior. The island attracts only the stubborn and adventurous, as it is only accessible by seaplane or boat. Those who make their pilgrimage to the island can delight in a number of hiking trails, inland waterways and spectacular coastlines. Those who tour the park via boat or kayak can view the haunting remains of shipwrecks.
