“The room appeared clean and luxurious bedding upon arrival. The first night I began to itch with just a few bites on my ankles and dismissed it as mosquito bites from the evening. The next day I woke to an extensive rash on the lower part of my body that resembled poison oak/sumac. The itching was excruciating! The staff was aghast at the appearance and suggested I see their paramedic who suggested several creams to apply. We removed the hibiscus plants from the room as well as stayed out of the sun and tried to stay cool and comfortable but the itching intensified. No one changed the bedding. The next day we called in a doctor from town who diagnosed it as an allergy to something in the water, perhaps a microorganism that can't be seen, sea lice made sense. He gave me a shot and several prescriptions and said to stay out of the water until I felt better. We left the next day. After returning home everything was washed including the home bedding. My primary doctor immediately diagnosed this rash as bed bugs and to confirm her diagnosis she took two specimens (biopsies). The results confirmed scabies which we have been told is a bed bug mite.....
I did acquire a similar rash to this from the previous year staying here but at the time thought the rash then was due to the Mayan steam ceremony that included heat and plants that I may have been allergic to. ”
