St. Michaels is a resort town on the Chesapeake Bay of only about 1,200 permanent residents, but with a large number of lodging facilities, charter companies and restaurants. The major attraction in the town is the 18-acre Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of Chesapeake Bay boats and devoted to the story of the bay through exhibits housed in its 35 buildings. The museum includes a working boatyard, artworks and the oyster boat, Edna E. Lockwood, a National Historic Landmark. Visitors to St. Michaels can also catch oysters on a Chesapeake Skipjack Sailing Tour, or visit St. Mary's Square Museum, featuring artifacts significant to the area.
