Kentucky Vacations

The state of Kentucky blends the characteristic friendliness of the South with the frontier history of the West, offering a charming and versatile venue that can entertain even the pickiest traveler. Kentucky is the home of Bluegrass music, named for the azure flowers that adorn its pastures in the spring. Despite its serenity and beauty, this historical state withholds a tumultuous past. The state was a battleground during both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War (with 64,000 soldiers fighting for the Union and 30,000 soldiers fighting for the Confederacy). Today the state’s strife is remembered only in museums and it puts its best foot forward to offer guests spectacular natural attractions, horse pastures and small charming towns.

Visitors can stop by Frankfurt to indulge in history, the arts and a number of outdoor activities. As the nation’s capital, Frankfurt offers visitors a number of spectacular museums to choose from, including the Capitol City Museum, the Kentucky Military History Museum and the Kentucky State Police Museum. Visitors can tour the Old State Capitol, which was the site of William Goebel’s shooting and still stands as a testament to Greek Revival architecture. Guests who are fans of the arts can stroll through the Josephine Sculpture Park or catch a show at the historic Grand Theatre. Outdoor enthusiasts with families in tow can view native flora and fauna at the Clyde E. Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary and Audubon Center while adventurous visitors can embark on a canoe adventure down Elkhorn Creek or the Kentucky River.

Travelers to Kentucky often flock to Louisville to enjoy the spectacular array of activities the city has to offer. Visitors can head to downtown Louisville to catch a play at The Kentucky Center for Performing Arts, watch an improv show at The Improv Comedy Club or visit one of the area’s numerous night clubs. Antiquing fans can stop by one of Louisville’s many antique stores and malls. The Derby City Antique Mall is home to more than 100 dealers and a Victorian tearoom while Joe Ley Antiques presents a variety of antique appliances, housing fixtures and architectural ornaments. Sports enthusiasts can catch a race at Churchhill Downs, which hosts the famous Kentucky Derby. Those who would rather spend time exploring the wilderness can find solace in the 6,000-acre Jefferson Memorial Forest, just south of the city.

Northeast Kentucky’s Bluegrass Country offer visitors a spectacular retreat from the bustle and noise of some of Kentucky’s larger cities. This picturesque countryside is home to spectacular estate houses, grazing horses and rolling meadows. The country is home to Lexington, known as the ‘Athens of the West’ due to its wealth and spectacular horse breeding culture. The city offers visitors a cornucopia of equine entertainment, which includes tours of world famous farms, horse races and even the International Museum of the Horse. History buffs can walk down the city streets to view the historic Victorian homes of the city or stop by one of several famous civil war sites. Families traveling to Lexington during autumn can enjoy the fall foliage by taking a paddlewheel cruise down the Kentucky River.

Outdoor enthusiasts and sightseers alike can embark on an underground adventure at Mammoth Cave National Park. Home to the longest known cave system on earth, Mammoth Cave extends a staggering 390 miles underground, boasting numerous labyrinths and spectacular chambers. Visitors who want to explore the depths of the Mammoth Cave can embark on an underground tour while those who would prefer to stay in the sunlight can hike along the intricate network of trails. Guests who want to spend some time on the water can opt to explore the Green River and Nolin River via boat, canoe or kayak.
