Amman is both the modern and ancient capital of Jordan and one of the oldest still-inhabited cities in the world. It is unsurprising then that its primary touristic focus is historical sites. The ancient Citadel sitting upon one of Amman's seven hills is the site of many Roman, Byzantine and Islamic remains. Nearby is the Great Temple of Amman, thought to be a temple of the Greek hero Hercules. From there it is only a short distance to the Jordan Archaeological Museum where an exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls can be viewed. Down the hill and back into downtown is the Roman Theater, an impressive structure built during the reign of Antonius Pius. It is still used today to host sporting events.
