Located in northern Italy on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, hugging the saltwater lagoons of Golfo di Venezia, lays the ancient city of Venice. The Piazza San Marco is a popular gathering place for tourists and is below sea level, which causes the piazza to experience a rush of tidewater during certain times of the year. The piazza also houses the famed Torre dell’Orologio, a 15th century clock tower that chimes every hour.
