The largest and most famous is the Grand Canal, which measures as much as 90 meters wide and cuts through the entire city. While riding Venice’s familiar gondolas, visitors can see notable structures such as the Palazzi Barbaro and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Once back on land, travelers to the city love visiting Doge’s Palace, also known as the Palazzo Ducale. Built in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the palace is one of the premier examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. Once the home of Venice’s ruler, or doge, the building is now a museum and includes paintings by numerous Italian artists such as Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese. Those interested in seeing an even grander collection of paintings often visit the Basilica de Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, usually just called the Frari. Completed in the fourteenth century, it houses legendary works such as Bellini’s Madonna and Child and Titian’s Assumption. Venice’s most spectacular cathedral, however, is Saint Mark’s, which is connected to the Doge’s Palace and is one of the pre-eminent examples in the world of Byzantine architecture. The Cathedral’s most recognizable feature are the Horses of Saint Mark, which date back to ancient Greece and are housed in the cathedral’s museum.
