Rome: Hotels with Balcony
Few of the world's cities offer vacationers a more rich and historic experience than Rome. Littered with ruins from the Roman Empire, Rome provides visitors a unique glimpse thousands of years into the past. Perhaps the city’s signature attraction is the Colosseum. Able to accommodate more than 50,000 patrons, it was once the site of gladiator battles, mock naval battles and fights between humans and exotic animals such as lions and tigers. Even more well-preserved than the Colosseum is the Pantheon. Built over 2,000 years ago at the direction of Emperor Hadrian, this huge facility was once a temple dedicated to the city’s gods. It became a church once the Roman Empire turned to Christianity and now displays numerous items of antiquity. Visitors to Rome often flock to Vatican City to see its museums and two main attractions, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Reputed to have been constructed over the remains of St. Peter himself, the Basilica is the largest Christian church in the world and the site of papal addresses to the faithful. Though it holds many fantastic pieces of art, the Sistine Chapel is best known for the spectacular fresco painted by Michelangelo that decorates its ceiling. Vacationers also often visit the Piazza Navona, the site of three of the city’s most lavish fountains. The most notable of these is, of course, the Trevi Fountain, which was sculpted by Bernini and is one of Rome’s most popular destination for couples.
