Milan is not only the second-largest city in Italy, but also one of its most commercially and culturally vibrant. Many begin their vacation to Milan by visiting the city’s central square, the Piazza del Duomo. There they will find three of the city’s chief attractions: the Royal Palace of Milan, the city’s soaring Gothic Cathedral and the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery. The Palace was the seat of Milan’s government for many years, although it is now an exhibition hall featuring numerous works of art and displays about the city’s turbulent history. The Cathedral, typically referred to simply as the Duomo, was under construction for nearly six hundred years before finally being completed in 1965. The largest cathedral in Italy, it is also the home of the Archbishop of Milan and regularly holds services. The Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery is one of Milan’s great gathering spots for both locals and tourists. Connecting the Duomo with the famed La Scala opera house, it is crowded with numerous restaurants and high-end shops. Though not nearly as lavish as the Duomo, the Santa Maria dell Grazie church is another of Milan’s top attractions, most notably because it houses Leonardo da Vinci’s spectacular fresco, The Last Supper. Those traveling with children would do well to visit the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza. The largest stadium in Italy, it regularly features some of the best soccer matches in the country and houses a museum dedicated to detailing the country’s storied athletic past.
