As both the capital and largest city in Indiana, Indianapolis offers dozens of interesting places for those vacationing in the area to visit. The city is perhaps best known for being the home of the Indianapolis 500, one of the premier auto races in the world. Indianapolis receives a flood of visitors on the last weekend of every May when the race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Speedway is also home to the sport’s Hall of Fame, which exhibits cars that participated in the race as well as hundreds of pieces of memorabilia. Those traveling with children have a wealth of top attractions to choose from while on their vacation. Established in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo is the largest in the state and exhibits over 320 species on its 64-acre grounds. Families can also visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest museum of its kind in the world. The museum was opened in 1925 and features interactive exhibits as well as over 120,000 artifacts. Those interested in exploring the city’s rich history will often make a stop at the memorial to the USS Indianapolis. It was erected to commemorate the lives lost during one of the worst naval disasters experienced by the United States during World War II.
