Visiting a park on vacation

A most enjoyable and rewarding vacation activity is visiting one of the many beautiful state and national parks in the U.S. These parks are natural areas that have been set aside for a variety of reasons, sometimes to maintain natural beauty, sometimes to protect a historic landmark or natural wonder, sometimes as a refuge for endangered species. However, they all have one thing in common: they are special places set aside for citizens and visitors to enjoy.

There are 58 national parks across the U.S., from Alaska to Florida, from Hawaii to New York State. Vacationing in one of these can often be the focal point of a family vacation and generally involves some travel, not only to get access to the park but also within the park itself. The very first area designated as a national park in the U.S. is Yellowstone National Park, where visitors can see geysers and other geothermal activity, spectacular waterfalls, and bears in their natural habitat. The Hawaii Volcanoes Park is a place where visitors can climb up and peer into the mouth of active volcanoes. A number of national parks are in spectacular mountain or canyon areas, such as Rocky Mountain Park, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, or Waterton Glacier International Peace Park. Along with magnificent scenery and abundant wildlife, these parks often feature hot springs. Several national parks include underground caverns, such as Mammoth Cave and Carlsbad Caverns. Others are natural preserves, such as the Everglades or Redwood. Visiting any one of these national parks creates a memorable vacation experience.

A vacation visit to a park, however, does not have to involve a great deal of travel. Every state has dozens of smaller state parks that are easily accessible at minimal cost. These parks are places families can go on vacation to enjoy the outdoors, camp, hike, swim, boat, fish, or just commune with nature. Regardless of which park you choose to visit on vacation, it is a chance to get away from the everyday routine of life to enjoy the peaceful and beautiful surroundings of a park and be invigorated and rejuvenated by nature.
