Stayed two nights, slept in same bed both nights, fine the first night but second night I woke up at 2 am itching like crazy only to find both arms, both feet part of one leg and my FACE covered with welts. More than 50 were counted by the doctor who treated me in the middle of the night with a cortisone shot for swelling and itching. Also gave me oral antihistamine and skin cream. I have never experienced anything like this. The night manager was neither particularly helpful nor sympathetic ...read full report

Found bedbug first night of stay. Have stayed at the Aqua Palms on several other occassions without problems. Called and asked for someone to come to room. Showed them the bug. I was told it was a roach. I have been concerned about bedbugs after hearing about problems in Honolulu. I googled bedbug photo to confirm that I did have a bedbug. Left hotel immediately. After returning to the mainland, I have what appears to be bed bug bites on my right arm. Six that I can see - I just noticed them. I looked on the internet, read reports, so that is what I am basing it on. At the hotel I did not notice anything but I now know what to look for and will inspect matresses in the future. The hotel was nice and the staff was excellent. I would not let this keep me from staying here again. I do not have the ability to upload photos of the bites.read full report

I've never experienced bed bugs before. I had a severe reaction to bed bug bites after the second night and ended up with Welts on my calves and some bites on my arms. I struggled on and went to the next door pharmacy who diagnosed me with Bed Bug bites. The Hotel moved me to a lower floor and have offered to "look after me" which Im not sure what that means but Im expecting some kind of discount. My legs are sore and taking a long time to heal. This has made my vacation somewhat uncomfor...read full report

How to check a hotel room for bed bugs?

There are 3 main areas of a hotel room you should inspect for bed bugs. It is a good idea to bring a small, bright flashlight with you to aid in your inspection.

  • The primary spot to find them is in and around the bed. Even unseen, they can leave tiny reddish or black streaks on sheets. Take off the bedding and inspect anywhere there are niches and crevices in the bed and headboard.
  • If possible, remove the headboard and check where it mounts from. Look at the baseboard and any other crevice a bed bug can hide in.
  • A favorite hiding place is the box-spring so lift the mattress and check the corners and seams. Remember, if you find one bedbug, beware, as there are probably many more. A female bed bug lays up to 500 hundreds eggs in its lifetime.
