Although Guatemala City, the country’s capital, has a reputation for being dangerous, it is also the cultural capital of the country. Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Central America, located in the Valle de la Ermita. Visitors can tour the city’s Historic Center, which lies at its heart, to visit sites such as the Presidential House and Constitution Plaza. Those wanting to escape from the claustrophobia of the city can visit Monterrico, located on Guatemala’s tropical coast. Located near Antigua or Guatemala City, Monterrico is a great retreat for those seeing a bit of weekend peace, as it offers several inexpensive hotels on the beach.
