Guatemala City is a large city of over a million people and the capital of Guatemala. The locale has been inhabited for over three thousand years and has many cultural and historical sites open to tourists. The Downtown Historical Center highlights the tradition of the late 18th century and its Mudejar-style buildings. It is also home to the National Museum of Arts and the Plaza Mayor, which is surrounded by the downtown retail center of Guatemala City. The massive granite National Palace, built in the 1930s and 40s, is also located in the Plaza Mayor. Many of the Palace's inner courtyards and state rooms, with their art and murals, are open to visitors. A more recreational destination is the Botanical Gardens, which is the first botanical garden in all of Central America.
