Another of Munich’s notable buildings is the Nymphenburg Palace, the former summer home of Bavaria’s rulers. Completed in the eighteenth century, this sprawling complex is still largely decorated in its original Baroque style and features a lavish garden that encompasses nearly 500 acres. One of Munich’s newer attractions is the Viktualienmarkt, a daily gourmet food market located in the center of the city. With over 140 stalls offering everything from food to flowers to cheese and spices, it is one of the most popular and acclaimed markets in Europe. Those traveling with children enjoy visiting the Tierpark Hellabrunn. One of the largest zoos in Germany, it houses over 340 species of animals, including exotic animals such as chimpanzees, piranhas and vampire bats. Visitors also enjoy being able to relax at the Englischer Garten. The city’s main park is home to attractions such as the Monopteros, or Apollo’s temple, and the Hirschau gardens.
