Athens is a town in the heartland of Georgia and is home to the state's major public university. The University of Georgia is Americas oldest state charted institution of higher learning, featuring an impressive arch, an historic chapel, and a number of other notable sites. Just outside of City Hall sits the Double Barreled Cannon, a Civil War Era cannon that was designed to shoot two cannonballs attached to a chain. While the weapon was never used, it makes for an interesting landmark in the downtown area. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to check out the Georgia Botanical Gardens, with trails winding through a 313 acre nature preserve. An impressive three story conservatory with internationally themed gardens is also featured.
