Delaware Vacations
Delaware is a state that is rich with history, offering visitors a mixture of quaint villages and large cities. As one of the smallest states in the Union, Delaware offers visitors a compact area to explore as they tour around this signature U.S. state. Delaware boasts a long and pivotal role in the history of the United States, making it a great visit for U.S. history buffs. During its colonization, the state was the site of a land feud between British, Swedish and Dutch settlers. Delaware today is renowned for being the first state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1787, and therefore the first state to join the Union. Low taxes have made this state a breeding ground for corporations, particularly credit companies, who typically choose Delaware as a location for their corporate headquarters. Despite its rapid urbanization, the state still pays tribute to its history.
Visitors to the state can stop by Dover, Delaware’s capital and one of its largest cities. Although the city has a reputation for being a run-down and working-class city, it selflessly offers guests a wealth of cultural activities and explorations to enjoy during their visit. Visitors can enjoy the cultural arts at one of Dover’s many museums. Guests can view the exhibits at Dover Art League, Mispillion Art League or catch a show at Smyrna Opera House. Those who would like to learn a bit more about the state’s long history can stop by one of the city’s many museums. The Old State House is a must-see historical relic. Built in 1791, the building served as Delaware’s capitol during the early years of the United States. Visitors can catch a horse race at Harrington Raceway or retreat to the Amish Countryside, just west of the city.
Travelers who would like to enjoy some fun in the sun can head over to Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches. Rehoboth Beach offers visitors an expansive, pristine beach that boarders a small resort town populated by numerous hotels, condos, seaside homes and bed and breakfasts. Visitors can continue south on the coast to explore Dewey Beach, which is renowned for its vibrant nightlife. Guests to Dewey Beach can lay out their beach blanket on the hot summer sand or explore the small, quaint town of 300 people.
Guests who are interested in testing out their taste buds can embark on a journey along the aptly-named Delaware Wine and Ale Trail. The trail offers thirteen breweries and wineries scattered throughout the state. Some of the biggest names in breweries include Dogfishhead, Evolution Craft Brewing Co, Nassau Valley Vineyards and Fenwick Wine Cellars. Guests who decide to embark on the wine trail can taste samples and learn about how the wines and brews are made.
Visitors who would like to immerse themselves in the Delaware sea culture can take a lesson at the Alley Oop skim boarding camp. Guests can learn how to skim along the retreating waves, or even watch one of the famous skim boarding championships held at the coast. Meanwhile, those who would like to do some nature sightseeing can head over to Bombay hook National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge spans eight miles along Delaware Bay and is comprised of more than 16,000 acres. The majority of the refuge is comprised of tidal salt marsh, tidal pools and cordgrass meadows. The refuge extends upland to include timbered swamps, forests and fields. Those visiting Delaware in the fall can enjoy watching the spectacular migration of waterfowl, while spring visitors can glimpse flocks of migrating shorebirds and songbirds. Year round, the refuge offers a wealth of deer, foxes, beavers and turtles.
