Connecticut Vacations

Located between New York City and upper New England, Connecticut is a scenic vacation destination that is often overlooked by busy travelers. The state offers a spectacular array of coastal and inland cities, equipped with stunningly enlightening names such as Mystic and New Haven. The state is divided by the Connecticut River, and is named after the Mohegan Indian word meaning ‘place of the long river.’ One of the state’s first settlements was built in 1633 by the Dutch, and since its humble beginnings the state has always played a pivotal role in the development of the United States. Connecticut brought the nation its Connecticut Yankee peddler, and contributed to the Industrial Revolution the moment that Eli Whitney built the New Haven factory in 1798. Connecticut was the fifth state to join the Union, officially established in 1788.

Visitors to Connecticut can escape to scenic New Haven. Home to Yale University, New Haven offers a mix of traditional port culture and upper-crust college culture. The town of New Haven has been one of the state’s prominent ports since the 1630s, but recently has risen to become an epicenter of the arts. Visitors to New Haven can view contemporary art at Artspace, learn about New Haven’s past at the New Haven Museum and Historical Science and view a number of archeological relics such as mummies and saber-toothed tigers at the Peabody Museum. The city center is home to the New Haven Green, a prominent park boarded by traditional colonial architecture and the famous Yale University. The city is also home to a variety of eclectic dining, theater and pub options, making it a hit for almost any tourist.

Aptly-named Mystic, Connecticut’s most cherished city offers visitors a scenic retreat for visitors. This coastal town features a harbor adorned with the glorious masts of sailboats and tall ships. Mystic grew up as a whaling town, and remnants of its stunning culture can still be viewed throughout the city and shoreline. The town is home to world-renowned Mystic Seaport – The Museum of America and the Sea. This museum allows visitors the rare opportunity to step aboard one of the majestic tall ships, stroll through a spectacularly re-created nineteenth century village or watch the working shipyard. Visitors who would like to learn more about Mystic’s oldest settlers can go to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, which features interactive exhibits, historic artifacts and dioramas dedicated to the area’s native history. Families visiting Mystic can stop by the Mystic Aquarium or stroll through the Historic Ship Nautilus & Submarine Force Museum.

Connecticut is home to the historic wonder, Litchfield, which stands as the state’s best preserved eighteenth century town. Located in the beautiful Northwest Hills, this New England town offers spectacular architectural sights, antique halls, museums and local shops. Guests can visit the Museum at White Memorial Conservation Center or explore the White Woods. Birders can enjoy the native wildlife at Topsmead State Park while wanderlust-driven adventurers can simply drive through the scenic countryside.

Visitors who are keen one exploring all that the state has to offer can take a long drive down the Connecticut Coastline. Some of Connecticut’s most scenic and industrial areas are located on the Long Island Sound. The stretch from New haven to the Connecticut River’s mouth offers a cornucopia of small, historic towns and coastal scenery. However, one of Connecticut’s most famous attractions is its stunning fall foliage. Travelers to Connecticut can enjoy a spectacular spectrum of yellows, oranges and reds as the deciduous trees prepare for the winter season. Visitors can hitch a ride on one of the many fall foliage tours or cruises that are available in Connecticut. Some of the best fall foliage cities include Essex, Litchfield Hills and Burlington.
