The French colonial town of Siem Reap provides a comfortable base for exploring the world-renowned Angkor Archaeological Park. The park encompasses the remains of the brilliant Khmer Empire's capital cities, built during the 9th through 13th centuries. These magnificent ruins are spread over 150 square miles, but tour operators are available to convey sightseers around by car, bus, helicopter, motorbike, bicycle or even elephant. The Angkor National Museum displays artifacts and exhibits relating to Khmer culture and history, great preparation for visiting the archaeological park. The Cambodian Cultural Village includes 11 reproduced villages, each representing one of the various ethnic groups that inhabit the country. The hundreds of defused land mines on display at the Landmine Museum remind visitors of the terrible legacy of Cambodia's recent wars.
