As the second-largest city in California, San Diego offers a huge variety of outdoor activities to vacationers. Visitors flock to the numerous beaches that line its shore. Families actually have a huge number of attractions in San Diego that are designed to appeal specifically to them. The internationally renowned San Diego Zoo is perhaps the most popular. Opened in 1916, it is home to over 800 species of animals, including exotic ones such as polar bears, pandas and gorillas. Families also love visiting SeaWorld San Diego, which features a regular schedule of dolphin and killer whale shows, as well as large aquariums full of every manner of marine animal. Balboa Park is also a top destination for visitors to the city. Within its 1,200 acre complex can be found attractions as varied as the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the Old Globe Theater and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Those interested in simply enjoying a relaxing walk will also find numerous gardens within the confines of Balboa Park, as well as picnic areas, playgrounds and hiking trails.
