Pismo Beach is a coastal town in California named for the Pismo Clam, once very abundant in the area although their numbers are much less today. Pismo State Beach is a 17 mile stretch on the coast that offers camping and water sports with an active surfing scene. The beach is the site of the largest winter migration of Monarch butterflies in the United States. The present Pismo Pier was built in 1985 and is popular for its triangle overhangs that give visitors a view over the water. Some notable restaurants in Pismo Beach include Giuseppe's Cucina Italiana, Steamers of Pismo, located on a cliff overlooking the ocean, and the casual dining establishment, Hoagies Sandwiches and Grill.
