Mammoth Lakes is a California town near a number of popular outdoor destinations. The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is nearby with 3,500 acres of skiing area. The Unbound Main section is popular with snowboarders and many top professionals train and compete at Mammoth Mountain, including Shaun White. The Devil's Postpile National Monument's most famous attraction is the postpile itself, and unusual column of basalt formed by lava flows, resembling a stack of timbers. The Ansel Adams Wilderness nearby is named after the famed nature photographer and spans over 230,000 acres. This area is infamous as the site where adventurer Steve Fossett was killed when his plane crashed in 2007; the wreckage was not discovered for a year.
