Bolivia Travel & Tourism
Bolivia is a land of natural extremes, offering dramatic landscapes such as lush jungles, dry salt flats and skyscraping mountain peaks. Bolivia is the country with the highest percentage of indigenous people in South America, a staggering 60 percent, making it a great stopping point for the culturally inquisitive traveler. Visitors can relax in the alpine village of Sorata, located between the peaks Ancohuma and Illampu. The village serves as a base camp for adventurous hikers who are planning to explore the staggering mountains in the Cordillera Real. The city of Uyuni sits in a dramatically different location than Sorata, settled in Bolivia’s arid southwest corner. This cold, wind-chilled city is the gateway to Bolivia’s Southwest Circuit, an attraction that delights the adventurous traveler with a plethora of hash landscapes. The Circuit takes visitors through the white salt flats, Salar de Uyuni, and the geothermal wonders of Los Lípez. Despite its unforgiving climate, the region houses many native Andean species amidst the bubbling landscape. Archeological enthusiasts can enjoy a trip to Torotoro National Park, which offers visitors various walking paths through the forest and glimpses of more than 2,500 dinosaur footprints dating from more than 120 million years ago. The park also hosts Cueva Humajalanta, the longest cave in Bolivia, and the picturesque Waca Senq’a Canyon waterfalls. For those who want to explore the Bolivian culture, the city of Sucre is a must-see destination. Renowned as one of Bolivia’s most beautiful cities, Sucre offers visitors a plethora of preserved colonial architecture. Whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets greet visitors as they walk through the city’s center. Here, development is strictly monitored and museums and churches abound to entertain tourists with an education vacation. Samaipata, located in the Cordillera Oriental foothills, is an escape for the pampered traveler. The town offers a variety of luxurious hotels and restaurants, making it a popular weekend destinations for locals.
