What does a bedbug look like?
Bed bugs are little mites that are hard to see with a naked eye. They tend to be dark brown in color, and oval in shape. Sometimes, however, they can appear red after they have fed on a meal of a host's blood. They have very small wings, but they are vestigial and the bedbugs are actually unable to fly. Instead, bed bugs move about by scurrying very quickly. Due to their very small size, what you see may not actually resemble a bug. A large bedbug measures 5 mm in size (about the size of an apple seed), though younger ones are only 1 to 2 mm in size.
How to check a hotel room for bed bugs?
There are 3 main areas of a hotel room you should inspect for bed bugs. It is a good idea to bring a small, bright flashlight with you to aid in your inspection.
- The primary spot to find them is in and around the bed. Even unseen, they can leave tiny reddish or black streaks on sheets. Take off the bedding and inspect anywhere there are niches and crevices in the bed and headboard.
- If possible, remove the headboard and check where it mounts from. Look at the baseboard and any other crevice a bed bug can hide in.
- A favorite hiding place is the box-spring so lift the mattress and check the corners and seams. Remember, if you find one bedbug, beware, as there are probably many more. A female bed bug lays up to 500 hundreds eggs in its lifetime.
How to Avoid Infecting your Personal Belongings with Bed Bugs?
Do not place any of your personal items on the bed before you check it or you may find yourself spreading bed bugs to your home with bed bugs. We recommend placing your luggage inside of the hotel bathtub or wrapping your luggage in plastic when not in use. Check your luggage when you check out and pay special attention to the seams on your suitcase. When you get home wash your clothes with hot water. Do not leave them in the laundry basket with your other clothes.

“We stayed the night at this hotel Saturday night and on Sunday I started seeing red spots on my legs and arms. By the time Monday came, I have multiple bites on legs and arms and they itch like crazy. I am now trying to make sure I keep my own house clean and wash everything and work on my mattress and box springs. ”

“My girlfriend and I got a room at American Inn, on the 3rd night I got bit by something on my chest and developed a huge welt. Upon inspection of the bed we found bed bugs, the front desk employee didn't seem like she was surprised or like she cared at all, she said the only thing she could do was move us to a different room, which we wanted. She offered no apology and was rude.”

“Don't remember the room number but we had connecting rooms. We had come to this hotel to stay for 7 days, while my patient had surgery at UTMB hospital. The mother and I and a special needs child checked in and room smelled bad of animal urine and carpet stained we noticed something biting us that night and called office to complain of the bites which we thought were fleas since the hotel was pet friendly and the odor nothing was done and we had to see doctors when we flew home.”

“Noticed something moving under the mattress cover which was zip tied to the bed. My husband ripped the zip tie off and when we pulled the cover back there was an adult sized bed bug crawling around. I had him run to the bathroom to grab some tissue paper which I used to pick it up and put it in a cup. We took it downstairs to the front desk. The gentleman looked it up on the computer to confirm that it was indeed a bed bug & wanted to give us a "top of the line" room but we insisted on getting our money back & changed hotels. ”

“My husband travels often and when the kids and I can get away we come along to make use of the room since he is working. We checked into Ramada Plaza Resort & Suites on 1/17/14 and stayed for 2 nights. We were in room 305 and immediately noticed ants crawling around the coffee pot and microwave area. We notified the front desk and they moved us to room 308
When we awoke on 1/19/14 our 10 year old daughter kept saying she was itchy. My husband inspected under the light and found numerous bites up and down the front and back of both her arms and a few on her legs.
I went straight for the bed to inspect the mattress, I threw back the pillow and began removing the sheets at the corner of the bed. Low and behold as I began inspecting my husband saw one on the pillow I had just flipped over. He took my daughter and the pillow to the front desk where they took a picture of her arms and immediately comped our room.
As I prepped to leave I continued to inspect and found several including one "baby" on the bed my children slept in. The desk had said they would be sendng someone to the room to inspect and no one ever came.
I have included 3 pictures in this posting because it is all that it will allow. We have a lot. This is very disgusting and I am only posting this to make other potential guests aware of what they could encounter here. The hotel was responsive in regards to this issue but will always question if they actually do anything with the information or simply rebook the room. Be warned. ”

“The staff is nice, the price was great but we got a little something extra that we didnt want!! Bed bugs!! On Sep 7, 8, 9 we visited STL to go to my sons god fathers very first rams game, he plays. and this hotel was convenient right across from the stadium, so we decided to stay at this hotel because they offered us a great walk away price.. Now Im wishing I would have just walked away! The first night there we noticed something kept biting us, we kept getting these little bites all weekend, we figured it was a mosquito in the room; we didnt think anything of it... Since the weather was so nice we thought there may still be some out.
We return home to our brand new town house days later, about a week later and we continue to get bit by the same thing from the hotel. At this point we figure out its no mosquitos, I got bit again on my leg several times my leg is swollen by this point, I go to the doctor to get treatment on my leg its so swollen from scratching, and we call an exterminator after looking up what the bites look like and they diagnosed us with a small case of bed bugs. They asked us where we had been recently traveling since our town house is brand new and we are very clean people. We stated this hotel was the only place and they said did we sit our bags on the floor? We said yes they said sorry to say but you brought bed bugs back with you.
We are furious and appalled that this hotel has now given our brand new town house bed bugs that are extremely hard to get rid of. We contacted them after we figured the situation out, and the GM, Lori basically called me a liar, Lori stated she can assure me they dont have them but they come out 12-5am Im sure Lori isnt in the room at this time then she also told me bed bugs dont have to be in the bed they can be in walls, tell me how she can see inside the walls. And she stated they have never had them before which sounds great but is a lie the hotel was reopened in 1969 and remodeled in 2009 this is the perfect hotel if they have never experienced one bed bug out of all those years. Then also stated no one else has complained about them since we left that doesnt mean you dont have them that just means people dont know if they have them yet or may be too afraid to speak up. Its no way to prove they gave us bed bugs. But its no coincidence that the same bites we never experienced in the hotel and several weeks later at the hotel matchup.

“I stayed here with My family for what I thought was a nice 3 day trip ending New Years day. We had to leave one night early because my four year old daughter found a "nest" of bed bugs in between the bed frame and matress on the bottom when she dropped her Barbie. So then my wife went nuts on me and forced us to leave at 3pm today. We got home a little while ago and just wanted to warn others that these guys denied they were bed bugs when I complained asking for refund trailing behind to screaming mad women. THANK YOU MANAGEMENT AT THE PRINCESS ROYALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did a search and found this site so I decided to give my fair warning. This place must be managed by blind folks. Oh yeah and every post on here seems accurate from what we went through. Right down to the management refusing to give refunds. It's obvious trip advisor is censoring reports as I only found six that had mention of bed bugs and I had to dig hard as hell just now to find them.”

“My daughter and I stayed at Hotel Whitcomb in Nov 2013. Within an hour of being in bed I was itching and I actually witnessed a bed bug. Upon complaint to Night Manager, we were moved to a smaller room on other side of hotel. Manager was apologetic and admitted they have had a problem in recent times. Explained it can happen anywhere. My daughter is a doctor and noticed numerous welts on my body. checked out the following day and even limo driver had heard of their bed bug problem. ANNOYED with EXPEDIA who didn't help in this situation. Don't recommend Hotel Whitcomb or EXPEDIA!”

“Upon arrival in our room I always check everything. As soon as I checked the bed... a Bedbug. Called the front desk. Security arrived promptly and collected the bug. Management took close to 1 1/2 hours to send us to a new room and we had a small toddler with us and waited in the hallway, not fun. When management was informed she insisted it I brought the bug with me. Insulted, I asked for compensation for the hard ache and exposure to bedbugs we endured. She gave me corporates phone number and told me she was not allowed to issue any refunds, but corporate would give us our refund. With that, when I got home I called the phone number and played the" up the chain of command game" for 6hours eventually ending at "Mr. Marriott's office". The women I spoke to at that office was the most unprofessional and cold woman I have ever been in contact with. She stated I was misinformed. I proceeded to tell her that the management is obviously misinformed on Marriott's Policy and further training was needed in customer service and management. I will NEVER stay at a MARRIOTT HOTEL EVER AGAIN.”

They work underground mining so their work environment is not what is contaminated. On addition, the pest control person said he had treated this hotel for bed bugs. ”

“My wife, mother-in-law, and I stayed here for one night on Thanksgiving Day (11/28/2013) after driving 6 hours from Pennsylvania to Virginia. My wife & I had room 710, and my mother-in-law had adjoining room (711), and she is 91 years old with very poor eyesight due to macular degeneration. Thankfully, my wife was with her at 10:30pm to help her for bedtime. After pulling back the bedspread, the bed was visibly infested with bed bugs. I put three live bugs from the sheets into a plastic cup, and took them to the front office. Front desk clerk David saw the live bugs and was very apologetic, and told me he credited the full cost of that room. The three of us stayed (because it was already late at night) in room 710 but spent a lot of time inspecting the beds. Needless to say, we didn't sleep much that night. In the morning, the dayshift desk clerk Tamisha told me that both rooms would be fully charged to my credit card, and that the night shift clerk David was wrong, and that an 'investigation' needed to be performed. I demanded to see the manager, but he wasn't available. She gave me a 2-page form (Incident Report) which I filled out thoroughly. I asked for a photocopy, but she refused saying that their insurance did not allow staff to provide patrons any copy of the report (that I filled out)! After 20 minutes of complaining, she finally did give me a 50% credit for the one infested room. A couple days later, another employee Joe called me and told me both rooms would be fumigated, and that he got the manager to approve the other 50% on room 711. I now see many other reports of bed bugs at this same location. Shame on you, Best Western. I have been a Rewards Member for several years, but will never again stay at a Best Western hotel. And I will make sure my friends and co-workers are also aware of how this was terrible incident was so poorly handled. ”

“Warning! Don't stay here! Spent the last 6 weeks being treated for scabies! My doctor is convinced it was this hotel! I have tried to contact the GM for weeks and weeks to only receive a cal today stating he did not receive a message until I posted my concern on FB....he claimed it wasn't his hotel room and could have been walking at Disney! HA! I asked if he were a doctor. He then went on to state I should have contacted him earlier! Which I made multiple attempts and again told me I could have gotten the rash anywhere! Funny that I didn't have it before his hotel! He stated his hotel was clean and safe! NOT! Just look at the reviews and that he is booked every weekend! Beware and stay away!”

“We reserved a 1BR a the Skyline Tower. Our room was great as always upon check-in. Woke up 11/24/13 itching like crazy on my leg. Prepared to get in the shower, assuming it was a mosquito bite (although I wasn't sure if they were still around in such cold weather)...noticed the bump. Itched more, scratched the other leg, noticed 2 more bumps, then noticed another bump near my groin! Checked the bed....found a bed bug crawling!! Called the front desk, they sent 2 men and a lady in which the men checked the bed and the lady watched. I showed her the bites, took pics as we'll, and was offered for my room to be changed. NO THANKS! We took our clothes to the washroom, went to check out after they were done and was told to go to security to fill out a report (if I wanted to!) Absolutely yes, I filled that report out hoping to save someone else from my nightmare! Then, I asked about a refund of my timeshare points as well as my $20 payment for 2days of valet, and of course they gave me two names of people I needed to speak to to be accommodated, both of whom were not available. Wyndham reports they have to send the information to Ecolab for a review of the bed bug situation and someone would call me. They never did! However, after speaking with the Corporate Office days later, (because we called them) we were offered a "certificate of stay" to be used at any of their other properties. The representative also informed me that she would be speaking with the staff at the Skyline tower to discuss the way they handled the situation. I am very cautious now that I know I had the "choice" to file an incident report. I wonder if there were other "situations" in which there was no report filed! While the Corporate office attempted to address the problem, it does not take away from the other areas that need attention, such as the two "unavailable" people at the Skyline tower who never even called to check to see if I was ok. Oh, and my timeshare points could not be refunded, they also did not return my valet fee, even though I checked out one day earlier.”

I informed an employee of what had happened and asked for a refund of the cost of the final two nights. He gave me the money and I left. “Stayed for one night first half of November and found 2 bedbugs. I forgot which room number but it was in the low 300s. I just want to report this issue so the hotel can resolve the problem and this does not happen again to anyone else. I reported it right away before being bitten to the front desk and they promptly moved me to another room which was bed bug free. Luckily we found them in time but I have been worried about transporting any bugs home.”

Checking for Bed Bugs in a Hotel Room
A hotel room is one of the most common places to find bedbugs. Bedbugs, while not like lice which attach themselves to people, are known to hitch rides on clothing and luggage, and a place that sees frequent travelers is particularly vulnerable.
Despite their name, bedbugs can be found most anywhere in a room where there are cracks and crevices these tiny nocturnal bugs can hide in. Bedbugs are brown or black; oval shaped and flat wingless (they actually have small wings but cannot fly) insects that range in size from the tip of a pin to a small seed when mature. Because they are nocturnal in nature they are unfortunately difficult to spot during the day.
The primary spot to find them is in and around the bed. Even unseen, they can leave tiny reddish or black streaks on sheets. It is possible that you may find the live bugs, dead bugs, bug parts, blood from smashed bugs, or bug feces which resembles pepper. After checking the top and sides of the mattress, lift the mattress and look under it with your flashlight. Take special care to check around the headboard area as well. Remember, if you find one bedbug, beware, as there are probably many more.
What to do if you find bed bugs in your hotel room?
If you should be so unlucky to find bed bugs in your hotel room, we recommend following these steps.
- If possible attempt to capture the bed bug in a plastic bag or small container.
- Take a photo or video of the bed bug in the hotel room.
- Pack up your belongings, carefully checking to make sure you don't bring them along with you.
- Leave the room with your belongings and report the issue to the hotel management.
- Report back and warn others and report on how well the hotel handled the problem.
