Alabama Vacations
Visitors to Alabama can explore the state’s stunning attractions while learning about its intriguing past. Alabama is geographically and ethnically diverse, offering rolling foothills in its northern reaches, congested city in its interior and the stunning subtropical beauty of the Gulf Coast in the south. Alabama both celebrates and retreats from its tumultuous history. As one of the first states to secede from the Union during the Civil War, the state lost at least 25,000 soldiers in battle and spent years recovering from economic loss. After the completion of the war, Alabama was reluctant to remove the Jim Crow laws until the Civil Rights movement swept through the state in full force. Since the Civil Rights movement, Alabama has evolved into a state proud of its equality, offering a diverse culture for visitors to enjoy.
Travelers to Alabama can stop by one of the state’s largest cities, Birmingham. Once the sight of political and social turmoil, today the city stands proud of its nickname, ‘Diverse City.’ The blue-collar city has plenty of attractions to entertain the casual visitor. A city speckled with skyscrapers offers visitors a chance to catch a game at the University of Alabama Birmingham, an excuse to enjoy hip nightlife in the Lakeview neighborhood or the opportunity to stroll through the upscale Homewood mall. Visitors with family in tow can take their children to the Civil Rights District’s many museums and attractions, located on the cusp of downtown.
Visitors to Alabama might be interested in taking a trip to the state’s capital. Montgomery, Alabama was once the epicenter of the Civil Rights movement in 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to forgo her seat to a white man on a city bus. Montgomery commemorates the Civil Rights movement and Rosa Park’s bravery with a museum located in the city center. Every year this cultural city hosts a spectacular Shakespeare festival to pay homage to the famous playwright. The city is also home to a spectacular folk arts movement, and contains a museum dedicated to the country music star Hank Williams.
Those who want to escape the confines of Alabama’s cities can retreat to the Gulf Coast to enjoy outdoor adventure and fun in the sun. Visitors can stop off at Gulf Shores or Orange Beach to enjoy family-friendly attractions such as theme parks, cruises and nature walks. Those who want to enjoy the warm Gulf Coast waters can kayak or jet-ski off the coast, while visitors who want to get above it all can indulge in a hot air balloon ride. The Gulf Coast is also a launching point for many oversea adventures such as deep sea fishing charters or beach cruise that allow visitors to spot some of the area’s exotic native creatures, such as bottlenose dolphins. Those visiting Spanish Fort can even embark on an airboat adventure through Alabama’s delta to view gators and other indigenous creatures.
Visitors can head up to Northern Alabama to view spectacular natural wonders within the forgotten forests of the Southern state. Couples and families alike can enjoy a trip to Cathedral Caverns, located in the small town of Woodville, Alabama. Discovered in 1952, the limestone cave is adorned with spectacular sculptural stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is paved and lit to accommodate the squeamish spelunker, and offers frequent tours and gem mining classes.
Travelers looking for that Southern small-town experience can travel to Huntsville, Alabama. The historic town offers a number of museums to appeal to the curious explorer, including the Huntsville Depot & Museum, which features one of the country’s oldest standing railroad structures. Guests can stroll through the numerous parks and gardens or catch a show hosted by the local theater company. The wanderlust traveler can even escape to the scenic Appalachian Mountains, just a short drive away.
