Alaska Vacations

Known as the Land of the Midnight Sun, Alaska is home to a plethora of activities for the outdoors-oriented traveler. As the northernmost state in the United States, Alaska is comprised of dramatic scenery and wild landscapes that are bound to spark a thirst for adventure in any visitor. Tens of thousands of years before the Europeans arrived to Alaska the land was inhabited by the resourceful and adaptive indigenous tribes. Decades after its European discovery in the mid-seventeenth century, a series of pivotal events lead to the United States’ possession of the area. While Russia originally claimed the land, the Napoleonic Wars left the country in such a need for finances that it sold Alaska to Secretary of State William Seward for less than two cents an acre in 1867. While the purchase was originally ridiculed and termed ‘Seward’s Folly,’ after the development of the Alcan Highway during World War II, discovery and access to the area’s riches contributed to Alaska’s statehood in 1959.

As the capital of Alaska, Juneau is a popular starting point for many tourists who are flying or taking a cruise to the state. The city boasts a historic downtown speckled with shops and art galleries, and a busy waterfront filled with fleets of ships. Located between snowcapped peaks and the stunning Pacific Ocean, Juneau acts as a gateway to the state’s numerous natural attractions such as Glacier Bay national Park and stunning Admiralty Island National Monument.

Visitors can escape to the coast to explore Alaska’s Prince William Sound, which is home to the world’s largest number of tidewater glaciers. Guests can take a boat tour of the sound or set out on kayaks to explore the diverse marine life that the area has to offer. Travelers can stop off at Admiralty Island, which is a 1493-square mile nature preserve. This 96-mile-long island is home to an abundance of native wildlife such as eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, bears and bald eagles. Hikers can explore the numerous rivers, lakes and rugged mountains that populate the island, or simply stroll along the pristine beaches and watch for humpback whales and porpoises.

Today Alaska still dazzles tourists with its abundance of natural resources and unparalleled beauty. Guests to the northernmost state can visit world-renowned Denali National Park. The park is home to a selection of Alaska’s native animals such as brown bears, caribou, moose and wolves. Visitors can also indulge in views of North America’s highest mountain, Mt. McKinley, from the park’s premises. Kanai Fjords National Park offers outstanding scenery for visitors who don’t want to be kept inland. The park is home to Harding Icefield, and numerous sculpted tidal glaciers. One of the park’s most popular attractions is Exit Glacier, which features a five-mile rugged hiking trail to the very edge of the ice field. Guests can also take one of the many wildlife boat tours offered at the park’s visitor center.

For a taste of civilization, visitors can head over to Anchorage, Alaska. This modern city offers guests all the conveniences of a typical U.S. city while remaining just a half of an hour away from the rugged wilderness. The city profits from the Prudhoe Bay oil business and is home to nearly half of the state’s population, making it a major political and economic epicenter. Travelers who find the city center too busy can head over to the small town of Kodiak. This worker’s town is home to the state’s largest fishing fleet, and offers a glimpse into Alaska’s fishing industry. Visitors can enjoy the outdoors and the city’s lively nightlife while getting an enlightening insight into the rugged Alaskan culture.
