What does a bedbug look like?
Bed bugs are little mites that are hard to see with a naked eye. They tend to be dark brown in color, and oval in shape. Sometimes, however, they can appear red after they have fed on a meal of a host's blood. See pictures below; click to enlarge.

How to check a hotel room for bed bugs?
There are 3 main areas of a hotel room you should inspect for bed bugs. It is a good idea to bring a small, bright flashlight with you to aid in your inspection.
- The primary spot to find them is in and around the bed. Even unseen, they can leave tiny reddish or black streaks on sheets. Take off the bedding and inspect anywhere there are niches and crevices in the bed and headboard.
- If possible, remove the headboard and check where it mounts from. Look at the baseboard and any other crevice a bed bug can hide in.
- A favorite hiding place is the box-spring so lift the mattress and check the corners and seams. Remember, if you find one bedbug, beware, as there are probably many more. A female bed bug lays up to 500 hundreds eggs in its lifetime.
